Chimney Price In. Ouch!

The estimate to replace the chimney liner just came in. It is $1020! That was more than I expected and it will have to wait a few weeks, Our $2200 property taxes are due on July 1 and the $900 dishwasher bill has to be paid then as well. My automatically paid Visa bill is substantial as well and is due in the beginning of July. July is always an expensive month!

While I am waiting, I will get a couple more estimates.

  1. That sucks, but at least you are in the land of Tequila so you can drown your sorrows.

  2. Yowza! You're right, this is not a good time for extra bills what with property taxes due at the end of the month. I feel the pain as we have car insurance and house insurance due this month too. Speaking of house insurance, has it ever gone through the roof in the last few years - ours has almost doubled and we don't have hurricanes, floods or tornadoes? What gives?

  3. Our house insurance has gone from under $300 when we bought the place to almost $900 now! Plus we found out that it does not cover floods that originate outside the house. Where do they think floods originate?

  4. I recommend the monthly payment plan. Here in Langley it is calculated over 10 months so for two months in the summer you pay no property tax.

  5. On the liner: The job is one a handy person can do in an afternoon. There are a number of people making the stainless steel liners that sell online. I popped one in my neighbors old masonry chimney that was cracked from a chimney fire in a few hours. It was ordered to length and came in a coil, they also come in solid joints that screw together. The fix covered some issues he had with sizing as well, his old stack was too big and was prone to creosote buildup. That problem seems to have gone away.
And: part of that high house insurance bill is the fireplace, a wood burning unit in a house can add 30% to the insurance bill, depending on the insurer.
