Conservatives love love LOVE the Second Amendment right up until the point where black people start exercising it.
Well that was a bit of a marathon travel day!

This Blog was created to chronicle our travels in Mexico but has since morphed into something else entirely. Our periodic Mexico travels are still in here but if that is why you came here, you will have to dig a little to get to it. Try searching the Blog Archive in the right hand column.
Why do you say that? Was there something posted with the photos to make you think some folks are more terrified of blacks carrying than of whites carrying? Actually, I was more 'concerned' about the female carrying, didn't really think much about the top picture (I'm female...). And I didn't think much about either one as terrifying or anything, more along the lines of 2nd amendment rights. But, I'm also not someone anyone would classify as conservative.
ReplyDeleteI am equally terrified of any one with a gun. The "right" on one site anyway are blaming Obama for the fact that blacks are arming themselves. Gee, that wasn't predictable.
DeleteI would rather see 'open carry', than 'concealed carry'....at least I know who has a gun, but all that being said neither group carrying rifles concerns me, unless they are known to be militant, or part of an extremist group. Context is everything. I love the liberal knee jerk theory that conservatives are afraid of blacks with guns....it's an interesting stereotype, and may apply to those out on the extreme edges of right, or left, but it is an unfair stereotype for the majority of either position, and I think deep in your heart you know it.
ReplyDeleteAs I said Clarke, I am equally nervous of ANYONE with a gun. I used to exclude police from that cover-all statement but recent actions by some police have given me pause. I know because I am white I am statistically less likely to fall victim but still, the next time I am approached by a cop I will react a little differently than I would have in the past.
DeleteWell said Clarke.
DeleteCroft, when you say "recent actions by some police" I assume you're talking about the police officer in Fergusen shooting the guy who tried to take his gun and then attacked him and the guy in New York who wouldn't obey the police and fought them.
Actions have consequences. If you break the law in front of a cop he isn't going to ignore it.
My mother told me the police were my friend and I always acted like they were, never having a second thought about talking to them, either at my request or theirs. Now however, I will make damn sure my hands are in plain sight and I do only what they tell me to do. They have proven that they can kill unarmed people who are doing nothing wrong with absolutely no consequence.
DeleteThe guy in New York, Eric Garner, was doing nothing wrong. He was not selling single cigarettes, he had none on him when he was attacked and strangled to death. When you are unable to get breath, you fight. It is an uncontrollable reaction, ask any lifeguard. He was not fighting the police, he was fighting for breath and for his life and they made sure he lost that fight. With absolutely no consequences.
You would think it made bigger news than it did. In the Mexican states of Guerrero and Michoacan theyhave their own "autodefensas" and it has wreaked havoc in the global news. I guess in the heavenly country of the U.S. anybody can have guns and all is well. But, you're right, put guns in the hands of whites and it's a non-issue, in the hands of blacks and OMG! Danger!
DeleteUnless you are a 12 year old black boy playing with a plastic toy gun in a park. I remember a time that my brother and his friends used to carry those exact same guns around and they never got shot for it.
DeleteSo sad when people react before thinking. He was only 12.
I played with those realistic looking guns when I was a kid too but times were different. Would I buy a great grandson one today? No. It is a different world, unfortunately.

ReplyDeleteThere's an interesting article for those of you who think cops are out to get you.
I don't think they are out to get me. I think they have a very dangerous job and can be and have been shot at for no or little reason. I know that if I were a cop and someone made a suspicious move I would be very afraid that I might just not make it home tonight. Could that mean shooting a large child with a real looking toy gun?
Delete"Hands Up, Don't Shoot" seems to be a pretty safe position to take when being approached by a cop.
