Time To Start The Planning Process

Planning process started - We are thinking a Baja Winter...

Facing a mixed reaction on Facebook where I announced this earlier! As I said there, I am having a severe craving for fish tacos!

It will mean a different kind of travel as the land mass is significantly smaller and the road is only 1600 KM top to bottom.  This means we will be spending more time in each location but we do not mind that. There is lots of beach camping available, either free or low cost.

We 'did' the Baja by car and hotel back in the early 80's so we know what to expect. Kevin & Ruth call it 'Mexico lite' and that is exactly what it is. Even back then the popular areas were overloaded with Americans.

One option that remains open to us is to take the ferry from La Paz over to Mazatlan and return home via the mainland. This would allow a stop in Mazatlan to visit Rae and Contessa. The downside is that it is a very expensive 17 hour ferry ride.

Lots of research and planning to do!

  1. Rae emails: Still can't comment on your blog with the new account, so I'll just say why not drive down to La Paz until nearly the end of your winter, get on the ferry, come to Maz for a couple of weeks, and then head home from there?

    1. That is what Kevin and Ruth did back in '08. It was expensive then, $1.200 dollars for the Baja Ferries or $750 for the Commercial Truck Ferry which is what they used. It will be more now.

  2. You confirmed what I expected of the Baja - crowded. Is it less crowded in the not so popular areas?

  3. Do you follow Lynne @ Winnie Views? http://winnieviews.blogspot.ca/ She did the Baja last winter and took fabulous photos and found some wonderful places to camp, not to mention great restaurants.

  4. This is a test comment since you already know how I feel about this plan. ;)

I'm not opposed in theory to you going to Baja. I mean, I'd like to explore it one day, too. But I'd also like to do a couple of happy hours with you this year!

  5. I didin't see Rae's comment. Okay then, how about an impromptu caravan? Meet at different points along the way? Not too formal, I don't want you to know my every move :)

    1. I didn't know you were coming to the Island George. If you don't bring the motorhome we have a bedroom for you. If you do bring it, we have a driveway.

    1. I think we will find it much like the Gulf Coast of the US. Funky little bars, restaurants, fishermen.. Just not as much English! Oh, and lower prices!
