We are starting to make some preliminary plans for the winter and are thinking of taking the Oregon Coast route down into California instead of the I-5 route we have always taken. This keeps us away from the mountain passes with their slight possibility of snow and keeps us on the coast with it's great food and slower highways. The weather is not going to be great but not that bad either. The long range forecast calls for temperatures in the mid to high 50's and rain about every second day.
We would take Highway 101 from Aberdeen, WA down through Washington, Oregon and part way into California. We would turn off 101 onto HWY 36 and join I-5 near Corning, CA. This route would take a few more days (and a few more gallons of gas) as we do not want to be in a rush but would allow us to enjoy the coast. We are in no rush!

YES!!!!!!! You've been taking the same route for ages! And the Oregon coast is gorgeous. When I was there last, the casino in Florence allowed RVers to stay up to a week. It was a great homebase to explore with the toad.
ReplyDeleteWhere to after? Are you heading back to Mexico?
Not yet determined. We will see how much money we have left after the dentist in Los Algodones.
DeleteCroft,bring your Dramamine,beautiful coast,lots of curves,even if your driving.
ReplyDeleteA route we would like to take someday, lots of pictures please, travel safe.
DeleteMaybe we can hook up and talk about what a terrible president Trump is making.
ReplyDeleteIf the polls are correct (and they are) that subject would never have to come up!
DeleteYou mean like the polls that said Scott Brown was going to lose? Brian never really recovered from that one. ;)
DeleteSounds like a scenic route. Hope all goes well at the dentist.
ReplyDeleteHighway 101 beats the I5 anytime. Cruising down the coast is awesome anytime of the year. After Corning just return to the coast and continue to San Francisco and San Diego. Beautiful country, we tented all along the coast. A great experience.
ReplyDeleteI did Highway 1 from near the Golden Gate bridge out to the coast once and it is not for 50 foot combination motorhome and tow car! In fact the road is posted "nothing over 30 feet" but there was no turn around after the sign so I was committed. I was using up the oncoming lane for most curves.
DeleteExcellent Idea -- Love traveling the oregon coast in either direction
ReplyDeleteHi Croft..a heads up about highway 36 we took it coming home one year, we were advised to go that way to avoid the Siskiyou it was the most terrifying trip ever there were three mountain passes. Mind you it was in March maybe the snow comes later.
ReplyDeleteThanks J & S, I will research that more but I am fairly confident of my abilities to navigate steep twisty roads after having toured Mexico for many years and before that, barely navigable mountain roads to mountaintop microwave sites for work, My fear tolerance is fairly high. But I will do some research.
DeleteWe weren't thinking of your driving skills, just that there was a lot of snow and nowhere safe to pull off, it may be different when you go.
DeleteWe usually take 101 all the way down to Novato, and then take Hwy 37 over to I-80. Sometimes we cut down Hwy 12 over to I-5, or sometimes we just stay on I-80 over to I-5. Avoids the Siskiyous all together. Pretty drive, non stressful. Sometimes there can be a little funky cold weather on parts of the coast, but generally its a nice drive....especially for the one in the passenger seat - great views!
DeleteI seem to remember someone explaining his erratic shifting patterns with my stick shift as "I haven't driven one of these since I drove one for work". I look forward to Norma's version of that part of the route.
ReplyDeleteDamn stick shift! But it did come back to me. I used to drive a '59 Volvo in sports car rallies. I may still hold the 3:00 AM speed record of seven minutes for around Stanley park in Vancouver. Don't write the old guy off! LOL
DeleteThe coastal highway will offer you some great scenics and, as you stated, the opportunity to delve into some fine seafood along the way.
ReplyDeleteWe have not taken our rig through there but four years back, in early May, we motorcycled back from Palm Springs on the #1 and #101 and it was an awesome trip.
I did it once in my first motorhome with my sister in about 2000 with no car behind and it was a lot of fun. The last time was in my last motorhome towing the car and it was good except for the very end of #1 where it joins with 101 near the Golden Gate Bridge. That road is not designed for large vehicles!
