Shoutbox, Part 2

I got rid of the Shoutbox. One of my prized regular readers got a virus warning that named this particular Shoutbox as a source of viruses.  Better safe than sorry, so I deleted the product altogether.

Please use the comment section or send me an email. Perhaps one day a good substitute will appear.

Here is the warning he got:
Warning: Something's Not Right Here!
croftsmexico.blogspot.com contains content from free-shoutbox.net, a site known to distribute malware. Your computer might catch a virus if you visit this site.
Google has found malicious software may be installed onto your computer if you proceed. If you've visited this site in the past or you trust this site, it's possible that it has just recently been compromised by a hacker. You should not proceed, and perhaps try again tomorrow or go somewhere else.
We have already notified free-shoutbox.net that we found malware on the site. For more about the problems found on free-shoutbox.net, visit the Google Safe Browsing diagnostic page.
Sorry everyone. It may be a false alarm but better safe than sorry!

  2. There are certain web sites that scan the internet for malware and viruses and publish the web address when it locates them.
That seems to be the case in the message you posted. It does not necessarily mean that the computer was compromised. The reader should run a complete virus scan.
You were right in removing the Shoutbox from your blog.

  3. Well that's a kick in the pants, but the correct thing to do. I'm thinking the popularity of a tool like "shoutbox" will start to decline if this becomes an issue.
EVERYONE needs to be running up to date virus scanning software however. No excuses.

  4. I disagree with everyone on this issue. There's no way a shout box can infect your computer.

But of course you did what you think is best and I would have done the same.

But just so you know I read that Blogger was actually a virus. Better be careful. ;)

  5. Well I posted a link but it didn't show. One thing I noticed in the link I posted was it talked about freeshoutbox.net and yours was from free-shoutbox.net. They are 2 different sites.

Remember when someone tells you there's a virus in something you would do well to check it out yourself and not just blindly follow them.
