No Painting Deal Here

Danny, the local car repair guy came over to see us shortly after we arrived on Isla. He said the CV joints would be no problem and that he would send his painter over to look at the car. Yesterday the painter arrived, looked at the car and wrote "12,000" on the dusty window and left without talking to me. $12,000 pesos is about $945 and is more than I am prepared to pay to paint a 1989 Honda. I have not heard back from Danny on the CV joints but it is no problem, They have been "clicking" for two years now and can wait until the next stop.

  1. Keep in mind that there are also different qualities of repair. Without knowing what kind of job they're going to do, it's impossible to know if 12,000 pesos is a deal or not.

I used to ask customers if they wanted it good, fast, or cheap. They can pick any two, but they can't have all three! I could do it good and fast, but then it's not going to be cheap. Or I can do it good and cheap, but then it's not going to be fast. Or, I can do it fast and cheap but then it's not going to be good!

    1. Our son drove down to visit us in Yuma one Christmas and got his small Ford SUV painted down there in a lean-to by a couple of guys who lived in Mexico and crossed into AZ every day to run the paint shop. It cost him $450 US for a full paint shop and a small collision repair on a front fender. His ex sold that car this year and the 8 or 9 year old paint job was still good. I realize prices have gone up in 9 years but not 3 times. I will keep looking.

Tioga George got the bottom half of his MH painted in Queretero last year and George is not known for spending more than he has to. We will try that shop next.

If that fails there is the shop in Merida that repaired and painted the two pushed in door on the same car for $1900 pesos. There are deals out there, I just have to find one.

    1. Sorry, I checked my spam file and it is not there either. Not sure what happened, all I can suggest is to try again. Sometimes "Anonymous" comments simply do not make it through.

  3. Gringo price, you need to find a Mexican to take the car for an estimate.

    1. That is exactly what the problem is Chris. I will try again down the road.

  4. Gringo shmingo....$945 bucks is a great price. It would cost you at least that much at home just to buy the primer, paint and some supplies. Also, I'm sure the Mexican gentleman could use the extra money for his family, if the "gringo" price is inflated a couple hundred bucks. Think of it as charity....
