A Moment Of Silence

My friend Chris who lives in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico posted this today. There have been tens of thousands of people killed in the current drug wars that are plaguing my beloved Mexico but this story has affected me and I had to share it (with Chris' permission). Twenty-one year old Lucy Quintanilla was a true innocent! The target was a prison guard who was leaving a building she was standing in front of. When is this madness going to stop?

Here is Chris' post:

"A moment of silence for Lucy Quintanilla who was murdered yesterday in a shooting in the center of Monterrey. An innocent bystander who was on the phone with her boyfriend at the time. A student from the UANL in the Facultad de Artes Visuales, loved by her fellow students and family.

Descansa en paz mujer, recordaba por su sonrisa. Una lástima, una joven, en el inicio de su vida, en su ultimo minuto de vida hablaba con su novio

(Rest in peace, remembered for her smile, just in the beginning of her life, in her last minute on this Earth she spoke to her boyfriend).

I only hope someday, that her classmates and boyfriend talk about this experience as part of Mexico's dark history. A violent, cruel, evil time in our history, attributed to those millions of selfish people who continue to consume drugs in the U.S. not knowing the damage, pain and hurt they have caused the rest of the world, especially my Mexico.

(To this day, no one has been able to explain how 40,000,000,000 dollars worth of drugs makes its way into the "greatest" country in the world every year, with the largest most technologically advanced military, more money than most countries will see in their history. A country that attempts (and always fails) to tell the rest of the world how to live their lives but has no control over its own population. It's sickening.)"

  3. That is terrible. So I'm ready to legalize it all from weed to speed. Tax the crap, make it to high standards of cleanliness, make it uniform, make it pretty cheap. The people who want drugs will get better stuff cheaper and the government will get some cash. It's a win-win!

  4. Don has it almost right. However, you can not have it both ways. That is tax it and also make it cheap; where the government and taxes are concerned nothing will be cheap.

I would suggest that ALL drugs that are now classified as "illegal" be provided free. This would remove the profit motive from the drugs and it would also remove the pressure for added crime to get the money needed to buy the drugs.

If, or when, the user becomes so incapacitated from their drug use that they can no longer function in society then put them on disability. this would be no more expensive than locking them up.

That is what I would call a win-win!
