Blocking Anonymous Commenters

I just had to spend two hours deleting 270 spam comments. They were all from "Anonymous" so I have had to delete anonymous comments. This will only affect one legitimate commenter that I know of.

Kelly, I do not want to loose you! Open a Gmail account and even if you do not use it, it will give you a Google ID to comment with. Give it a try here and email me if you have problems.

Same goes for anyone, email me at croftsmexicoatgmaildotcom (fill in the @ and dots) and let me know. I want to keep all of you!

In fact, everyone make a test comment here just to make sure! Email me if it doesn't show up.

  1. That's a pain to have to put up with all of those. As I recall you had the same problem in the past, which prompted me as a former anonymous commenter to set up an ID. Heck, it even caused me to start my own blog. So, I guess you can take the credit (or blame) for that Croft.

  2. Yeah, I get a lot of "anonymous" spam comments as well. I delete them daily as they come in though, so although it's still totally annoying, I'll keep putting up with it for the few people who do leave legitimate anonymous comments for whatever reason.

    1. The majority of these 270 some comments were all within the last few days. Blogger's spam filter caught another hundred or so, maybe more, I just deleted them in bulk.

  3. I believe in the 2 years that I've used Wordpress I've had one Spam comment make it through their filters. There has been 1206 comments caught by these filters though. If I ignore the quarantined messages they just disappear without me doing anything. It's a nice feature as you don't want to spend too much time doing unnecessary tasks. Blogging is hard enough work don't you think?

  4. That sucks Croft. Even if I disagree with someone I would never spam them.

    1. Jeez Don, if everyone who disagreed with me spammed me, I would be buried in it!

  5. I've been spammed like crazy lately. I wonder if Blogger turned something off or they are behind on the hackers. Makes blogging not so fun.

    1. That's what I'm thinking Chris. Their catch percentage used to be much higher.

    2. We consistently get three or four per day. Never had the numbers that you guys are talking about, and we also use blogger.

  6. I moderate my comments and manage to pick up one or two a day, so they never get to the posting.

    1. That is the other option if blocking Anonymous does not work out for my commenters. I hesitated to use it because at times I am without Internet for a day or so and would not be able to moderate.

  8. I share your disgust for spam commenters and wish that all would develop virulent testicular cancer to occupy their lazy minds.
