EDIT: My first two commenters corrected me on the species of woodpecker. It is a male Hairy Woodpecker (Picoides villosus). http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Hairy_Woodpecker/id/
Thanks Emily and Heyduke. I sure have smart readers!
This Blog was created to chronicle our travels in Mexico but has since morphed into something else entirely. Our periodic Mexico travels are still in here but if that is why you came here, you will have to dig a little to get to it. Try searching the Blog Archive in the right hand column.
I think that's Hairy Woodpecker. Lovely shots!
ReplyDeletecool little guy but not a Pileated, they also have a fluffy top like mom and dad - looks like it might be a young hairy woodpecker...
ReplyDeleteMan, I have smart readers! A Hairy Woodpecker it is!
ReplyDeleteWe had Hairy WPs nesting in our yard in North Carolina, and they frequently brought their young to our our suet feeders. Glad I could be of help!
DeleteIt's interesting what one can learn from bloggers. Nice pix.
ReplyDeleteWe learn a lot from each other!
DeleteThe sun was not in the best place for photos. It was off to the right and slightly behind the bird, making it a little back-lit and washed out. It took a bit of fiddling with Picasa to get the colors to "pop" at all.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful bird. Was that taken with your new camera?
ReplyDeleteYes, at the 750mm telephoto setting, on a monopod to steady it in the imperfect light.
