Savannah

We arrived in savannah at about 3:00 yesterday. We read that you can boondock in the parking lot at the visitors center downtown for $10 per night and that was where we headed. We planned on staying two nights and since the center was right in the historic section of town, we could explore the whole place on foot. That is what we thought…

It turns out that Thursday is St. Patrick's Day and Savannah has the second largest St. Patrick’s Day celebration in the USA! Traffic was ridiculous, the visitors center was standing room only and the streets were full of drunks in green shirts! We stopped illegally with the flashers on and called RV parks. We finally found one 20 miles out of town with room for us at $60 per night. This is way more than I am comfortable spending but we did not want to leave without seeing Savannah so we booked two nights. I set the GPS for the Rivers End RV Park and off we went. The GPS lady wanted us to turn left but every left turn was barricaded off. We finally found a cop, told him where we wanted to go and he told us the way to get there. It was about 6:00 when we finally parked.

This morning, we headed downtown in the Honda to see what we could see. We thought that the party would be over but no, it goes on from Wednesday night until Sunday night. We parked in a lot for $15 and walked around. There were bands playing at full volume everywhere, usually one for each eardrum. The free tourist bus was not running for some reason and there were lineups everywhere for overpriced food.

It was as if we had gone to New Orleans to see the city and had arrived in the middle of Mardi Gras! I hate green! Savannah is however, a beautiful city and we did get to see some of it.

  1. You made it! Pity about the timing, though.

When you get foot sore, head down to River Street, buy a cold beverage, and watch the paddle boats going up and down the river.
