The Dollar

I see today that our Canadian dollar is worth ninety-seven US cents. Not bad, it would be nice if it were a little higher but we can live with this. Much better that in 2002 when our dollar was worth only sixty-four US cents! We managed that year although we did stay parked in Yuma to save gas and to cash in on monthly RV park rates and we limited our meals out to once or twice a week.

They will be getting more of our Loonies this year! Maybe we can get a little sunshine in repayment?

  1. Maybe you should have rented an RV in South Africa. Canadian Dollar vs SA Rand is near an all time high!

  3. Dang, we're down again! We were up over the US dollar a couple of days ago. My US clients pay me through PayPal and I always watch the exchange rate before transferring to my CDN bank account so that I don't get smacked with the currency exchange rate. We were high enough earlier this week that I got back my PayPal fees and pocketed more than the USD total on the invoice by a couple of dollars.

  6. I am wondering about the healthcare in Canada as far as keeping it. You mentioned somewhere (it's getting to be a blur, I've read so many posts now) that to maintain healthcare in Canada one needs to live there 6 months out of the year. I am wondering if there is a way one needs to provide proof of residence, or if the passport records are sufficient? I realize you have a house there but I am wondering, what if one were a fulltime RVer, would a PO box address be sufficient? Maybe you might know where I can find more information about this?

    Thanks so much in advance.

    1. Medical coverage in Canada is federal but regulated by the Provinces so every Province is, or could be, different. In BC we used to have to spend more than half a year in Canada but it has recently been changed to five months in Canada. We can now be out of the country for seven months.

We had one friend who got a letter from the government stating that they had reason to believe that he had been out of the country to long and that his medical coverage had been cancelled. He had to wait for six months and then re-enroll. Their information was false but he had to prove it with credit card statements and letters from neighbors.

As far as proof of residence, I have no experience but do have a friend who has been through these hoops and finally has it figured out. This was one of the reasons she has now bought property in Saskatchewan. She is a single RV'er and has an interesting Blog at http://travelswithmiranda.uskeba.ca/ I know she would be willing to share what she has learned.
