Bourbon Street

We finally made it down to Bourbon Street! We discovered the shuttle service was the RV park owner simply driving us downtown for $5 per person so we booked him for 2:00. It was a good deal and he gave us a short tour of Now Orleans before dropping us off a short walk from the tourist area.

We were a little early and had about a half hour to kill before the music started in the many bars along the street. We stopped at a place that bragged about having "the best mojitos on Bourbon Street" and sat at a streetside table sipping our drinks and people watching. This was the only place we found that did not have 2 for 1 drinks which was a mixed blessing. It was easier on the budget but limited the number of places we could visit. We ended up visiting four venues plus the original street side table. If you are counting, that is nine drinks each with very generous pours!

Some of the signs along the street.

Norma learning the steps to the "Cupid Shuffle".

To the right, to the right, to the right, to the right
To the left, to the left, to the left, to the left
Now kick, now kick, now kick, now kick
Now walk it by yourself, now walk it by yourself

This young woman was very nice. She was actually a singer in the band and was waiting through the DJ music for her set to come up when she decided Norma should learn the dance.

Zydeco!

We had a blast before taking a taxi home at about 7:30. The evening cost us about $120 everything included, not cheap but afterall it IS New Orleans!

  1. Looked like a fun evening for you and Norma. 7:30pm??? C'mon Croft you're in N'awlins, the night hadn't even started yet. Bet it'll be hopping on New Year's Eve!

    1. Rick, it was those nine mandatory drinks each that got us ready for the taxi a little early. NOLA is a little like Las Vegas in that once the party starts it is hard to tell the time, We actually thought it was later but we had seen everything. As it turned out our timing was good because by the time we got home it was raining hard.

  2. Well, now I know what NOLA stands for - had me stumped. Still wondering how 2 drinks turned into $120 - guess you missed a few steps in your post…… guess it was the nine drinks. :)

    1. You have to buy a drink in each of four places which amounts to nine drinks each through the evening because of the 2 for 1 thing. Drinks are about $8 - $9 each but you get two for one. That means about $20 in each place after tip times four places plus shuttle and taxi = $120 give or take.

  6. I was happy to know that Bourbon Street didn't have damage from Katrina; they could never rebuild it to have the same ambiance. Looks like you two really 'did the town.' It's quite an experience. I was there for Mardi Gras years ago - a whole week - once is enough for me but it was soooo much fun!

  7. We have been there quite a few times and enjoyed many different bars along Bourbon Street. Great music, great food and fun sights.
Never at night thou as we camp for free in Abita Springs on the north shore.
Lots of neat sites to see and the street entertainers are fun too.
Have you checked out the Garden district and interesting cemeteries ? Both are interesting.

  8. Not bad cost for a night on the town in NO - really. 9 drinks a person - ouch - out of my league. I would need an ambulance home. "More oxygen PLEASE!"

    1. They make it difficult. You have to order a drink in each place and they give you 2 for 1 at $8 or $9 in order to keep you in their place longer. If you want to see a few places like we did, you have all these drinks to deal with. I watched her pour one of my drinks after I asked for both my drinks in one glass. She free poured at least four ounces in my glass.

I guess I could have ordered something without booze but what is the point? It would have cost the same I am sure.
