Beignets and Causeways

Yesterday we decided to head out to the Cafe Du Monde for beignets. These delicious little squares of deep fried dough liberally sprinkled with powdered sugar may not be the best breakfast but they sure are delicious! We searched Google Maps for one of the cafes and found one in a mall near the start of the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway, a 24 mile long bridge that crosses the huge lake. We decided to take this drive after breakfast.

The route back home took us through Sidell, LA where we stopped for a few groceries. It was a nice day, a little warmer than it has been here.

We added three days to our time here at Jude Travel Park to get us past New Years but were told we would have to change spaces. I was not looking forward to this because of the difficulties of setting up the StarChoice with the many trees and buildings here. As I was disconnecting this morning (thankfully before moving the dish) the owner came over and told us she had a cancellation and we might be able to stay put. It worked out and I re-hooked the water and sewer.

Today we might take a drive downtown where they have a new T Mobile Prism II SmartPhone on sale for $49, marked down from $115. It has mixed reviews with most of the negative comments based on it's inability to play some of the new games, something I never do. As long as I can make phone calls, do email and a little web surfing with it, I will be happy.

  1. If you get another craving for beignets before you leave and don't want to drive all the way beyond Slidell, there's one in Gretna on the West Bank (in the Oakwood Shopping Center).

I hope you will be happy with your T-Mobile phone. I haven't heard any good reviews of T-Mobile's signal availability, so it will be interesting to hear your thoughts on it. By this, I mean that everyone I know who has gone with T-Mobile says they have trouble getting a signal outside of certain areas and especially away from major cities. My friend L is with T-Mobile and he frequently had poor to no service when I had perfect service with Verizon. It would nice to hear good things about T-Mobile as they are a little cheaper.

    1. We have used T-Mobile in the USA for years Rae and have been quite happy with the coverage. I do run into the odd dead spot but not all that often.

  2. I LOVE BEIGNETS! I even use the mug I bought at Cafe du Monde for my morning coffee mostly just to remember how much I love them. I also bought the package for making beignets while I was there and the results were surprisingly good.
My mom was a Québecoise and occasionally made what we called "Fried Dough." It was actually beignet dough that was fried in butter, slathered with more butter and drowned in pure maple syrup. The dish wasn't prepared for breakfast, but for a Friday meatless dinner or a Saturday night TV-watching dessert treat.

    1. Forgot to say, for some unknown reason, the several times I've visited Cafe du Monde in New Orleans, I've always been wearing black - not a good idea with all the powdered sugar!

    2. How do you manage to eat all that delicious food without gaining hundreds of pounds?

  6. Wow! I had bought some of the coffee at a store here in LA and told my wife that I liked it. She then ordered a lb of the coffee and a box of the beignet mix plus a coffee cup from there. She actually called them to make sure they got the order right. She gave it to me for Christmas and it was one of my best gifts. I'm going to try the mix in a day or so.

  7. Just love the area around there. We enjoy camping on the North shore Abita springs, and drive the causeway for some fun times in NOLA.
    Have too much dun there.
