Thinking, Maybe Too Much

I was talking to Norma over coffee this morning and told her I was having trouble getting into the travelling mood this year. She asked If I was having second thoughts and I said yes, I was.

We spent a few thousand on the porch, we are in need of a new roof on the rest of the house which is "sort of" scheduled for September and we are going on a trip to Ireland next July. Adding around $4000 for medical insurance for the winter plus all the gas and RV parks added to the equation is taking me a bit out of my financial comfort zone.

We could do it. We could take the money out of our savings but I don't really want to do that. It is a "Rainy Day" fund and it is not raining.

Norma says if I want to take a year off our winter travels this year it would be fine with her. I think Brooks and LindaLee want to fly back to Cabo San Lucas this winter for a couple of weeks and we could tag along with them to get some sunshine. Norma also says she would like to take a trip in BC before Fall.

Nothing is cast in stone, we are just thinking.

Plus there is this "Trump" thing going on and I hate supporting him in any way and keeping some of my money in my pocket would be one way to express my disgust with him and those who support him.

  1. On the other hand, while you have your health and are able to travel I would suggest that you do. How knows what next year may bring.

  2. I agree with what Contessa says. Life is short. Use every moment. My Dad was dead by your age, and he certainly didn't plan it that way.

  3. Well, there is that. Like I say, not cast in stone. The trip to Ireland is going to happen in July (no firm dates for the wedding yet) and we are thinking of adding a vacation in the Greek Islands and/or Malta with that trip. Turn it into a couple of months. There is also the seven month limit to be away from Canada to consider.

  4. No matter what you do you need to feel comfortable with it, And I am sure you will make the right decision whatever it may be. Looking forward to seeing what y'all decide.

  5. We are with you too Croft! I would also like to do a BC fall trip and have no desire to go into the US at all. I would like to keep our $$$ in Canada and maybe help the BC tourist economy that has taken such a hit this year. I think flying to Mexico, direct of course, would be awesome way to spend the dreary January/February months. We did that a few years ago and it was great.

  6. But, but, I won't see you if you don't make it to AZ.

  7. Having good health and traveling doesn't necessarily mean you must spend time in the 4th Reich. I won't spend a nickel in the USA until Herr Trump is out of office. Save your money for Cabo, Ireland and maybe even Greece.

  8. I hear you. I don't know when we will go back to the US for the same reasons that you mention. I haven't even bothered to get our passports renewed. Sounds like you've got a lot of interesting traveling coming up next summer. I envy you that.

  9. "Plus there is that "Trump" thing going on..."😩

We're Americans. Do you have any room left in Canada, say for the next 3+ years?😉

    1. Ed, Carol -- We feel the same way. Subconsciously, I think the reason we have been leaving the US more is to get away from all the national tension. We really need to take a trip to Canada just simply to relax and not be glued to the television and newspaper every day to see what stupid thing has happened next.

  10. Other than the reasons you stated, I wonder if you and Norma are getting a little bored doing the same things and in the same way every winter season. With the rise in the number of quality Air BnBs, your trip to Ireland and the European continent could be easy and comfortable. I've heard compliments from Contessa regarding Colin's and her use in Italy of an Air BnB. Kevin and Ruth have used Air BnBs. Les used them on the road in New Zealand, Australia, and Ireland. AND, Rae is thinking about turning a portion of her newly leased house in Merida, Mexico into an Air BnB. The pricing is a heck of a lot more reasonable than a hotel room.

  11. As winter creeps in it may certainly change your mind...

  12. There is nothing wrong with changing things up. You have incurred a lot of expenses this year. Plus you might enjoy a canadian fall trip and the use of your new porch too. Sounds like a great plan to head to Mexico for a few weeks with the family. As far as a trip to Ireland you will have the time of your life(used to live there) and a trip to Greece is wonderful. We went to Crete 11 years ago and had a special time there. Rented a car and drove all over the island. Met some dutch people there and they made the move to Crete permanently. It get tiring trying to live each day like it is your last! Also some blogs I have read the writer seems to be so bored of doing the samething over and over. I think you have aome amazing fun travels coming up. Cheers
