Porch Day!

Brooks is coming up today with a trailer full of cedar to frame our new front porch. It is going to get very busy around here! The "plan" is framing today, decking tomorrow and the roof next week. The roof is still being discussed. Norma wants an open, pergola style while Brooks is suggesting a closed, shingled style, extending the existing peak. That decision will be made tomorrow.

    1. You bet! This is a DIY project. Cuts, slivers, bruises and all.

    2. In extending the existing peak of the house roof, did you possibly think of installing two skylights in a closed roof for the porch, thereby providing more natural light for the large window. In addition, the pitch of the porch roof will add to that light. However, the only negative to that method would be possibly less support for a heavy snowfall on the roof. We have the same porch you anticipate building, but with a very sharp pitch to the roof and a glass wall from the family room onto the back porch. No skylights needed because of the pitch of the roof and partially sliding glass wall.

    3. That is exactly what we are going to do! Common sense prevailed and we will have a solid roof with two skylights! We are 150 feet from the ocean so no snow load to speak of. It will be way overbuilt in any case.

  4. Just guessing, but the reason Norma may want the open pergola is that more natural light will still be allowed into the large window than if you built a closed porch roof and, of course, an open pergola is very stylish. On the other hand, I see you and Norma have an open patio to the left of your picture, so a closed roof porch would be nice in the event of inclement weather and the front door area would be more protected from bad weather.

    1. Hence the dilemma. Yes we have patios off to the left, several hundred square feet of them with an outdoor fireplace where we had a retirement party last year with about 50 people. I will have to publish some photos of the area once the mess is cleaned up.
