The High US Dollar Is Hurting!

I am just booking my Mexican vehicle insurance. My friend Rae found a company in Nogales where she got a good deal. I checked out their prices but they are only a couple of dollars less than San Xavier where we always get ours and where we have had two claims and great service. We will stay with them. The last time we bought Mexican Insurance was in 2012 and cost in US which converted to $740 CA for six months coverage. This time it will be $920 CA, almost $200 more, mostly because of the inflated US dollar. One nice thing about living in BC is we get a refund on our Canadian vehicle insurance for the time we are out of their jurisdiction. This refund will cover the cost of the Mexican insurance but we will not get the credit until after we get home.

I still have to call about Travel Medical Insurance and I am not looking forward to this call. We paid $3,500 Canadian last year for six months but we are both a year older and may be penalized for this, Getting old sucks. In Canada this cost is tax deductible as a medical expense.

I am waiting for a money transfer before I commit myself on either of these. I had to dip into the 'Rainy Day Fund' one last time before I converted to a RRIF as I also have a $5,000 CA dental bill as soon as we get to Yuma and Algodones, Mexico on November 16.

  1. It is all happening fast - or so it seems. This weekend NOVEMBER Yikes! We have stayed later than usual here in Xico; and we are mighty ready for some better weather. Sunday is our target. Hope to see you down there (here).

  2. The US dollar does hurt us somewhat, but the fuel costs and alcohol cost are still way less then Canada. To bad we don't have a taxable income to write off the out of country insurance.
No rebate for Mexican insurance for us unless we move to BC.
Would be nice but my better half not ready for that.

    2. Loved it there in 1975 when I stayed in Duncan and travelled up to Campbell river. Victoria then the drive back to Ontario. Amazing country.

  3. I am so glad that I don't have to think of the exchange rate right now since I took US cash out of my US account without doing any conversions. If I hadn't, I don't think I'd be enjoying myself as much as I am. Since I get paid in USD, I always plan my budget as though the dollars were at par and the conversion to CAD is 'bonus money.' So I didn't get my 'bonus' for October, but at least I'm not having to think about how my $20 would be $27 back home or whatever.

I picked Don Smith Insurance last year because they were walking distance from where I was staying and open on the weekend. Their prices are comparable or cheaper to others, so I didn't see any reason to get elsewhere this year. Also, I think you get full coverage. I only get liability, no coverage for my own vehicle repairs, since my truck is pretty much parked all winter, plus SGI said that I still have some limited amount of coverage while in MX.

Yes, getting old sucks, but the alternative sucks worse! :)

    1. I think we should all stick with the insurance company we have a relationship with. San Xavier was very helpful both times we needed them so we will stick with them. They gave us options of allowing $40 per hour for repairs or $90 per hour. This depends on having the work done in Mexico or in the US. We chose the latter. We get full coverage on the motorhome and liability only on the car. The Honda insurance is $177 US and the MH, $506 US

    2. Interesting. I was told by SGI that I would have zero coverage in Mexico, and actually that's the story that makes sense. Also, SGI allows you to totally cancel your vehicle insurance while out of Canada/US and reinstate it the day you cross north again. Given that all of my past experience is with Ontario (which sucks), I love SGI insurance.

Yes Croft, we just learned in our two week U.S. crossing, that the only real deals now for Canadians are fuel, hard liquor, and cheap wine. For decent beer, it's not even a good deal anymore, although it is still slightly better than Canada. And no, Bud Light or Keystone light don't count because, after all, they're not really beer.

    3. I feel sorry for the snowbirds who are staying in the US this year. I talked to a guy downtown who said two of his friends are staying home this winter because of the dollar.

Beer! I agree, no Bud Lite or Keystone for me either! I buy Pacifico or Tecate in the US whenever I can or one of the more expensive American brands. In Mexico, it is usually Pacifico.

    4. I wouldn't be surprised if I got bad advice. The gals at Western Financial in Assiniboia are pretty much useless. :( It's now been two occasions where I've gone in to do the 'my vehicle will be out of SK for more than six months' declaration and asked them if I could just cancel/suspend during that time and been told no. Their reasoning for saying that I can't cancel/suspend for the winter is that I need coverage while I am in the US, and then they can't cancel/suspend once I'm out of the country, which sounds totally contradictory to what you've been told. Anyway, I'm not super worried because my truck pretty much sits all winter, so it's not in much danger. Paying the monthly fee does suck, though.

    5. So if there are snow birds staying home this year, I wonder if parks in the US will be lowering their rates? (Am I not optimistic). I hope so? We decided to do Florida, this year, and it seems the rates sure do not reflect less people going.

    6. We were warned about RV park prices in south FL and left our RV with friends in central FL, We found a motel in Marathon, FL for $99 per night while the RV park right next door cost $110 per night.

  4. We use San Xavier also and with our one claim they were great and did not increase their fees the next year. I feel for you with that dental bill. So glad bought clothes last year and don't need anything this year. However the wine will still be an expense.

    1. Yes, the wine! You haven't found any of the box wines you like, have you? 1 box = 5 bottles. I bought three one year but made the mistake of storing two of them in an outside bin and it got too hot and the last one spoiled. A sad day!

    2. yes Croft that would make for a sad day...
