One Hand Giveth,

image

While the other hand taketh away! The Initiatives financed by the Mormon Church and other fanatic, right wing, so-called “Religious” groups have taken away the rights of millions of Americans by banning Same Sex Marriage in California, Arizona and Florida. One of the proudest days for the Civil Rights Movement, the day Barack Obama was elected President was also one of the most disappointing. They have turned the most joyous day into one of the saddest days for all of us.

I fail to understand how anyone's “God” could possibly object to the marriage of two people who love each other and want to share their lives. This misguided effort discriminates against all of us. We believe “An injury to one is an injury to all” and millions of people have been injured by this Hate Legislation.

I have been told that Gay Marriage threatens heterosexual marriage. I would sure like to hear a rational (even an irrational) explanation of that! I can assure you, there is no intention to make it mandatory! Don't worry, you are safe!

When they can’t back up that argument, they resort to the equally ridiculous argument that marriage is to create children. Well, someone should tell people beyond child bearing years that it would somehow be “immoral” for them to marry. Same with people who are sterile through birth defect, accident or genetics. What about those who simply chose to not have children? Is that now "immoral" as well?

Another Initiative bans Gay Adoption in Arkansas. Once again, the “Religious Right" imposes their own “morals” on us by insisting a child would be better off in the Foster Care System or on the streets than in a loving home cared for and supported by two parents. No, they say, a child needs both a mother and a father. What then do they propose to do if one parent is killed? If a marriage dissolves? If one parent has no interest in helping to raise a child?

No, there is no rational reason for any of this, it is simply what it is, Hate Legislation, and they have turned this into a very sad day for all of us!

  1. Sadly, the world continues to be filled with bigots, racists, and hypocrites. When exposed to scrutiny for the worms they are, they go underground to hide from view.

Perhaps this will change in the near future. A black man was elected President on Tuesday, so anything is possible!

  2. You would have to agree that it's difficult to have a rational discussion when one side uses perjoritives like "bigot, racist, hypocrite, homophobe, etc." to describe those who disagree with their position. When these terms are used there is no need to have a rational debate...these terms end the debate....the opposition is bigotted, homophobic, so their option has no value...end of discussion.

Those of use (52% in California) who believe marriage should remain defined as between a man and a woman wonder why we are labeled extremists, when we want marriage to remain as it has for over 5,000 years of human history. Why aren't those who want to change the 5,000 year old definition the extremeists, the radicals? Why are they not the intolerant?

I don't know anyone who is for Proposition 8 that believes same sex marriage hurts their marriage. I don't know anyone who is for Prop. 8 who isn't in favor of civil unions. I'm not saying there are not people who believe those things, but I have never come in contact with them.

If you are going to redefine marriage based on who loves whom, or what then you will have to remove the restriction on how many people you love that you can also marry, or whether, or not a brother can marry a sister. You will have to remove the restriction on what you can marry....your motorcylce, your dog, your car. If I "love" my car, why can't I marry it? Why should society tell someone they cannot have 15 wives if they wish, or 15 husbands if they wish? As Elton John said recently (November 13th)....marriage is for heterosexuals, civil unions are for gays...I'm paraphrasing, of course, but that is what he said. Is Elton a bigot?

Those again Prop. 8 who are blacklisting businesses because an employee, or manager contributed to the pro-Prop. 8 seem to be promoting McCarthyism from the left. Is that not an extreme position?
